Our performance management is broken
...is a statement I hear frequently from HR people.
Not only have I heard it frequently, but also consistently, for years and years.
For many, performance management is on a continuous break-fix loop.
And the reason for this cycle...
We tend to get focused on the solutions available to improve employee performance.
Which leads us down the path... of tech selection.
Choosing performance activities and supporting tech (solutions) is important.
It shouldn’t be the starting point.
What’s the alternative?
Let’s imagine something crazy, just for a minute...
What if there was no Internet?
And you couldn’t:
- search for PM solutions
- download templates
- access ‘best-practices’
- ask for demo’s
What would you do instead...
You’d likely do what we used to do.
Work it out yourself... or at least by speaking with people in your organisation.
The ‘obvious’ insight...
If you find yourself in the performance management break-fix loop...
Start ‘within your organisation’. End with ‘solutions’.
But, what does that actually look like...
I’ve learnt to zoom out from the tech and look at the big picture needed to succeed with PM
The tech is merely the ‘vehicle’.
Imagine choosing a vehicle for a journey...
Without knowing the destination or anything about your crew.
The bottom line to remember is this...
Performance management is about helping people to do their best work.
If employees aren’t adopting your process...
You’re likely missing the bigger picture.
And no amount of shiny new tech can make up for that.
